Illiterates don't exist

Picture
A lot of people in Uganda say that they are illiterate. However, when you have a close look at their daily lives, you will find that they are able to read, write messages, do calculation and even have a book with records. Are these people really illiterate? When we did our research and really engaged with the so called 'illiterates' we realised that many of these people are engaged in literacy activities in their daily lives. They keep track of sales records, write notes, read signs, labels or names. The Delphe project is designed to uncover daily literacy practices and see how they can be incorporated in functional literacy programmes in Uganda.
